This morning, the federations and unions of the land transport sector in Lebanon held a meeting that included all the components of the unions and federations of the land transport sector headed by Bassam Tlais and in the presence of the President of the General Labor Union in Lebanon, Dr. Headquarters of the General Labor Union.
The meeting began with a speech by Tlais, who considered that “the land transport sector has reached an intolerable level.”
He said, “We endured a lot and heard great words. Every public driver of any category who says a word is right and his reference is the union, and he is an incentive for us to act with greater responsibility.”
He added, “We know that all economic sectors are affected and affected by the price of the dollar, but what we do not know and politicians must know is what they did to confront the matter? What is the status of the dollar and its repercussions on the people? We developed a public transportation plan in 2011. We want integration between the public and private sectors for the sake of people so that they do not feel that there is a shortage, and the state is not responsible for its condition, so how can it carry out its duties? What government are we waiting for? The Prime Minister is required to put the issue of the land transport sector on the agenda of the first session of the Council of Ministers.
He concluded, “The presidency of the General Labor Union is concerned, and the unions and trade unions of the land transport sector in Lebanon are part of this union. Therefore, I do not allow myself to announce the move that the President of the General Labor Union, Dr. Beshara Al-Asmar, will announce and specify its date.”

Al-Asmar said: “The General Labor Union, land transport federations, and federations under the banner of the General Labor Union, along with a dialogue with the executive authority, but we have not reached anything yet. Therefore, on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, a meeting of the Executive Council of the General Labor Union, which will announce a strike on all lands. Lebanese, on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, in which the land transport sector and other federations in independent public and private interests, government hospitals, the Trade Union Coordination Authority, teachers, and liberal professions unions will participate. The basic demand of the General Labor Union is to elect a president immediately, and to enter into dealing with matters in accordance with the constitution because the situation has escalated and must be dealt with quickly. We will prepare for this stand on all Lebanese lands, and there will be no blocking of roads for anyone, and we call on the security services to protect the gatherings, and we call on everyone to prepare for this strike.
Tlais called on “all the components of the land transport sector, who are the most in pain, to prepare for the implementation of the strike on February 8, which will be an uprising for public drivers, provided that a press conference will be held next Monday at the headquarters of the General Labor Union.” He said, “We will not allow anyone to turn fuel into a problem between the public driver and the citizen. The driver is also a citizen, and the state must assume its responsibilities.”
