Albanian Prime Minister Rama announced in a video statement that he would immediately cut ties with Iran. The decision “is in full proportion to the severity and danger of cyberattacks that threatened to paralyze public services, infiltrate government systems and stir up domestic turmoil and unrest,” it said.
The Iranian embassy in Albania was not immediately available for comment.
The U.S. government has announced that an investigation has concluded that Iran was behind the July 15th cyberattack. The United States will take further action to endanger the security of its allies and hold Iran accountable for its nasty cyber attacks, the National Security Council (NSC) said in a statement.
Albania and Iran have been in tension since 2014 when Albania hosted some 3,000 members of the Iranian dissident Mujahideen Al-Khalq, who have settled near Albania’s main port of Durrës. .
