Algeria doubles its military budget for 2023

Algeria seems determined to catch up with the technological backwardness of its army and is giving itself the means to do so. The North African country has decided to double its military budget.

The Algerian military budget for the year 2023 will be 22.7 billion dollars. This is the sum proposed by the authorities for the 2023 finance law. It will be voted by Parliament at the end of November, and this without debate, as desired by President Tebboune for all defense files.

Since 2004, the Algerian military budget has averaged 10 billion dollars a year, so this is an increase of more than 110% in a single year for a budget that was already among the highest in Africa.

This increase is also historic for this country, ranked among the top thirty in the world in terms of military spending.

According to several experts, the Algerian army is seeking to modernize and increase its military intelligence capabilities.

The financing of this new budget is notably made possible by the rise in the price of hydrocarbons, due to the war in Ukraine, knowing that the supply difficulties of European countries which lead to an increase in gas exports in Europe have bailed out the coffers of the ‘State.
