Third-party Android app store developers outside the US can now enroll in a new registration program designed to streamline installations. Announced by Google following its legal settlement with Epic Games, the system introduces one-tap sideloading and automatic updates ahead of its official December 1 launch.
The transition toward open alternative marketplaces on mobile devices is shifting from legal settlements into functional reality. Following a court battle with Epic Games that concluded with an agreement to allow third-party app stores as alternative options inside the main store, Google is opening enrollment for developers who want to bypass the traditional, multi-step hurdles typically required to install alternative storefronts on user devices.
Third-Party Store Enrollment and the December 1 Launch
Alternative app store developers can enroll in the Register App Stores program starting today. While participation remains completely optional for developers, joining the initiative unlocks a simplified installation flow for end users when the system officially goes live on December 1. Stores that choose not to register will continue using the standard installation process without any adjustments.
The program is rolling out initially for devices running Android 17 QPR2 and later, specifically for users outside of the US. Although the rollout begins internationally, the Mountain View-based company intends to bring the initiative to domestic shores eventually, pending court approval of its settlement with Epic Games.
In March, we announced the Registered App Stores program to give third-party app stores a more streamlined way to reach users while maintaining the safety and security of the Android ecosystem,Eligible app stores outside the US can now apply to register their stores ahead of the new simplified installation experience rolling out to users later this year.

Streamlined Sideloading and Developer Requirements
For developers who complete the registration process, the primary advantage is a frictionless installation path. Enrolled stores gain a single-tap sideloading process that removes secondary system confirmation screens entirely, letting users initiate downloads with a single touch. Alongside faster installs, the feature set includes download progress indicators and automatic background updates.
Participating creators also secure early access to technical documentation, dedicated onboarding support, and developer tools like the Android Developer ID API. However, joining the program carries costs: developers must pay an annual registration fee that covers operational support and new capabilities. Furthermore, additional review fees apply if a store’s application catalog exceeds established thresholds for malware.
Alternative Stores and the Current Market Landscape
The restructuring of Android’s sideloading ecosystem follows a multi-year legal clash. The resulting agreement opened the Play Store to alternative app options. While the process has already begun, the selection remains limited in its early stages; currently, Aptoide Games stands as the sole alternative store available for users to download directly from the main marketplace.
As more alternative storefronts prepare to enter the ecosystem, this enrollment framework aims to accelerate how users access external software. With registration open and the December 1 launch date approaching, the operational rules for third-party marketplaces on mobile devices are entering a distinct new phase.
