Angera Council Questions Future of Historic Vedani Nursery School

Marco Brovelli, a municipal councillor for “A come Angera,” has publicly questioned the future of the historic Vedani nursery school in Angera, asking whether the institution will transition to state control or remain a parity school.

Vedani School Faces Financial Debts and Governance Disputes

  • Uncertain Status: Local officials dispute whether the Vedani nursery school is transitioning to state control, with the administration stating no final decisions have been made.
  • Financial Footprint: The school relocated in 2023 to a municipal property in Via Arena following a total expenditure of 1.8 million euros, leaving an active 20-year mortgage of 900,000 euros.
  • Governance Friction: Councillor Marco Brovelli criticizes the lack of transparency, noting that the multi-year planning document for 2027–2029 omits the facility’s structural future.

Financial Commitments and Municipal Debt at Via Arena

The Vedani nursery school has operated since 1865, providing childcare and educational services to families in Angera. In 2023, the institution transitioned into a third-sector entity following its relocation to a newly prepared facility on Via Arena. The building is owned by the municipality, which funded safety and infrastructural upgrades as part of a total project cost of 1.8 million euros. This expenditure included a 20-year municipal mortgage of 900,000 euros that remains active on the balance sheet.

Councillor Brovelli raised concerns over the structural transparency of this transition. He noted that rumors regarding a potential state takeover have circulated without formal notification to the municipal council or the local community. The municipal Documento Unico di Programmazione (DUP) for the 2027–2029 triennium contains no references to the school's operational status. Brovelli asserted that if the transition is a concrete proposal, the municipal administration should have involved council organs from the outset, particularly given the ongoing financial obligations tied to the property.

Mayor Androni Denies Undisclosed Transition of School Status

Marcella Androni rejected claims of an undisclosed transition, stating that no formal decisions have been finalized. She clarified that any institutional shift toward state administration would be initiated by the school entity rather than the municipality itself, rendering any immediate insertion into the DUP unnecessary. Androni added that if the institution eventually achieves state status, the real estate assets would remain under municipal ownership, while families could benefit from reduced tuition fees.

Regarding public engagement, Mayor Androni maintained that community assemblies would be scheduled only if deemed necessary, emphasizing that the initiative must come directly from the school administration. Brovelli countered this stance by pointing out that the foundation’s board of directors consists largely of members designated by the mayor, creating a direct administrative link. The municipality currently provides an annual subsidy of 30,000 euros to the entity, reinforcing the argument for greater transparency between the local government, the board, and the families utilizing the facility.

Financial & Administrative Metric Recorded Figure
Founding Year 1865
Relocation Year 2023
Total Relocation Cost 1.8 million euros
Active Municipal Mortgage 900,000 euros (20-year term)
Annual Municipal Subsidy 30,000 euros

The institutional future of the Vedani foundation remains dependent on forthcoming communications between the foundation’s board and municipal leadership.
