Apple unveils ‘A16 Bionic’ chip with 16 billion transistors

Apple unveiled ‘A16 Bionic’, a new processor to be installed in iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, through an online event held at 10 am on the 7th (2 am on the 8th, Korean time).

The A16 Bionic is produced in a 4-nano-class (N4) process that improved the 5-nano-class (N5) process of TSMC in Taiwan.

There are a total of 16 billion built-in transistors, which is equivalent to the M1 chip, the first proprietary processor Apple announced in November 2020. This is an increase of about 35% compared to the A14 Bionic (11.8 billion pieces) and about 6.7% compared to the A15 Bionic (15 billion pieces).

The CPU consists of a total of 6 cores, 2 high-performance cores and 4 low-power cores, just like its predecessor, A15 Bionic. Compared to the previous work, which differed in the number of GPU (graphic chipset) cores depending on the product, this time it consists of 5 GPU cores.

There are a total of 16 neural engine cores in charge of AI, such as machine learning, and the maximum amount of computation is 17 trillion operations per second, which is about 54% higher than the A14 Bionic (11 trillion times per second) and about 7.59% higher than the A15 Bionic (15.8 trillion times per second). done.

In addition, a new SoC, a display engine, has been added to control the always-on display installed in the iPhone 14 and the ‘Dynamic Island’, which is the upper notification area.

Apple explained that the power consumption of the high-performance core built into the A16 Bionic has been reduced by 20% compared to its predecessor, and the power consumption of the high-efficiency core is 1/3 of that of its competitors. However, Apple did not clearly state which AP it was compared to.

The A16 Bionic is expected to be installed in the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max to be released this year as well as iPads to be released in the future.
