Arab League summit in Algeria officially postponed

The Arab League has officially postponed its next Summit scheduled for January 31 in Algeria. the announcement was made by the Deputy Secretary General, Houssam Zaki, who clarified, during a press conference, in which he participated, during his visit to Algeria. The latter led an official delegation to follow the preparations for the organization of the next summit.

According to the official, the Summit will only take place after the month of Ramadan, which coincides with the month of April. “We are in the process of coordinating with the Algerian authorities in order to agree on an appropriate date which suits all the Member States”, he indicated, stressing that the League is trying to ensure the presence of the greatest possible number of Arab Heads of State.

Indeed, after this postponement, the official date for the holding of the next summit should be definitively fixed during the meeting of Foreign Ministers of Arab States, scheduled for March 2022, in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

The constraints of the pandemic also seem to complicate the holding of the Summit, the Arab official explained that the Algerian authorities insist on organizing it in face-to-face mode and refuse the virtual option.

This Summit takes place in a difficult regional context marked by the rupture of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Algeria, decided, let us recall, unilaterally by the Algerian regime. Houssam Zaki expressed the Arab League’s desire to restore “Arab solidarity”. A way of wanting to attempt mediation between Rabat and Algiers. All attempts at mediation by several countries have been rejected by the Algerian regime.
