Bed bugs were found in a student residence in Brussels 2024-03-21 20:04:35

“We discovered seven rooms with bed bugs out of the 1,500 rooms we offer. The rooms are not all in the same complex, but the students have contact with each other,” explains one of the directors.

He noted that “everyone affected has been contacted and the first round of inspection has already taken place. As bed bug eggs can still survive in the chambers, we will soon carry out a second round of eradication measures. However, all students were able to return to their rooms normally.”

In Brussels, there is a specialized team made up of Belgian Malinois trained to detect bed bugs. Last weekend the dogs checked all the beds in the home.

Bed bugs: How are they?

It is a tiny parasite that feeds on the blood of animals and humans. It can even penetrate passages no thicker than a credit card and detects human presence by carbon dioxide produced during exhalation.

Bed bugs don’t fly, but they walk very fast and can climb any surface, such as walls and ceilings.

It has an oval shape and a brown color. The body of an adult bed bug is flat and no larger than an apple pit. After feeding, the bed bug’s body swells and becomes reddish in color.

The bed bug life cycle includes three phases, egg, larva and adult. The eggs are very small in size and hatch for about 6-10 days. It then passes into the pupal stage which includes five stages of development until adulthood.

Bed bugs produce 1-3 eggs per day. Its shelf life ranges from 5 months to a year at ideal mild temperatures.

The bed bug bite does not hurt and is therefore not noticeable. Redness and itching later appear at the point where the bed bug bites.

  • The clearest sign that there are bed bugs in your space is to see them. Their size and shape resembles an apple seed.
  • If you see small dry remains that look like bedbugs, you most likely have bedbug skin. The bed bug in various stages of development sheds its exoskeleton.
  • Bed bugs also leave droppings. If you see small dark brown-black spots, they are most likely bed bug droppings. They are most obvious in places like the bed mattress.
  • You may also spot dark red spots of blood left by the bed bug after a meal.
  • In the places where bed bugs are found, a characteristic unpleasant smell emerges that they produce from special glands. It becomes more apparent in spaces that are not frequently ventilated.
  • Finally, the clearest sign is the marks after a bed bug bite. The marks on the skin are usually straight or zig zag and look like patches.

  • How clean we are is not a concern of bed bugs. More often, they appear in our area from another place that they have infected.
  • It is a type of insect that feeds on the blood of humans and animals. They live from 10 months to 1 year.
  • They usually bite us when we sleep. They need from 3 to 10 minutes to get full. Then they move away.
  • They can live several months without feeding.
  • The size of the adults is that of an apple seed (5-7 mm). Females can lay hundreds of eggs, each the size of a grain of dust.
  • They do not make nests, like ants or bees. However, they tend to live in groups in their hiding places.
  • They do not appear during the day. They only work at night.
  • They don’t fly. But they move quickly on floors, walls and ceilings.
  • Their concentration is favored where there is a high concentration of people. The warm weather also helps them.
  • Their favorite places are dark, hidden places.
  • in the seams or between the cushions of sofas and chairs,
  • in the folds of the curtains,
  • in drawer joints,
  • in electrical outlets and appliances,
  • in clothes,
  • in bed,
  • under carpet near boards,
  • in luggage,
  • in layers,
  • in mattress covers,
  • on objects near the bed,
  • in headboards,
  • in used furniture.
  • You may carry them in your purse (as long as you have it resting on a piece of furniture that has bed bugs).
  • Their flattened body helps them fit into tiny spaces and thus reach where there is blood to feed.

How to never have bed bugs in your home

There are certain things that you must pay attention to in order to never get infected and also to have a proper treatment of bed bugs.

Below we will mention the most important ones:

  • Thoroughly check for bedbugs used furniture, carpets and rugs that you bring into your home.
