Belgian Couple Stuck at Antalya Airport for Bringing Back Stones from Turkey: Legal Troubles and Potential Prison Sentences

For several days, a couple from Deurne has been stuck at Antalya airport, Turkey. Indeed, Kim and Warre are accused of having wanted to bring back to Belgium three stones, collected on a vacant lot in Manavgat.

The authorities thought they had stolen them from a museum, because of the engraving of a flower on one of the stones. “But according to a lawyer we spoke to, the department investigating the stones is very busy. At worst, it might last until December,” they tell Nieuwsblad.

The FPS Foreign Affairs reacted: “Do not take stones when you return from a trip to Turkey,” he warns, before continuing: “It is strictly prohibited to export antiquities, minerals or objects found on site. Even if they have no historical-cultural value.”

If Warre was able to leave the country, Kim must report to the police station every Monday. Serious consequences may be imposed: “Prison sentences of 10 to 20 years,” warns the FPS Foreign Affairs. “The act of removing an object, however small, from an archaeological site constitutes an offense and is considered the illegal export of antiquities.”
