Driven by an explosive 420-yard rushing performance, the Canyon Eagles defeated the Hereford Whitefaces 52-7 on Friday night at Whiteface Stadium, securing a dominant opening victory in District 2-4A Division I.
Ground Attack Powers Canyon Past Hereford
The Canyon Eagles (5-1 overall) wasted little time asserting control during their district opener, establishing a relentless ground game that left Hereford’s defense struggling to find answers. Canyon built a commanding 21-0 lead in the opening five minutes behind swift scores, setting the tone for a lopsided victory that extended their winning streak to four games.
Austin Turner led the offensive charge for Canyon, churning out a game-high 180 rushing yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Teammate Tripp Miller added 77 yards on just three carries, highlighted by a blistering 65-yard touchdown sprint down the sideline in the first quarter. Jaylyn Keith further cemented the ground dominance with 68 rushing yards and a touchdown, including a 45-yard trap play early in the third quarter that effectively put the game out of reach.
Canyon’s coaching staff utilized diverse offensive packages to keep the Whitefaces on their heels, maintaining relentless pressure through multiple ball-carriers. Quarterback Brox Hacker also contributed through the air, rolling right to find Will Killgore for a 7-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. Lane Burton rounded out the scoring efforts with a 41-yard field goal just before halftime, lifting the Eagles to a 24-7 advantage at the break.

Hereford Adjustments and First-Half Momentum
Despite the early deficit, Hereford (2-4 overall, 0-1 district) showed resilience under first-year coach Matt Medley. In an effort to disrupt Canyon’s defensive schemes, Medley introduced new flexbone concepts for the first time all season. The tactical shift caught the Eagles’ defense back-pedaling in the second quarter when Zack Galvan broke loose through the middle for a 45-yard touchdown run, cutting Canyon’s lead to 21-7 with 6:49 remaining in the half.
Hereford threatened again shortly before halftime when quarterback Bennett Bell connected with Brix Machen on a 36-yard pass that would have advanced the ball to the Canyon 19-yard line. However, the play was nullified by an illegal touching penalty after officials ruled Machen stepped out of bounds before returning to make the reception. Disputing that Canyon defenders had forced Machen toward the boundary, Medley argued the call and received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, backing Hereford deep into its own territory and forcing a punt.
“I thought the big pass play and penalty was a big turning point,” Medley said. “Officiating is tough and I didn’t agree with that call. We had the momentum and we had a chance to go in and cut the lead to 10 at that point.”
Defensive Lockdown and District Standings
Any hopes of a Hereford second-half comeback were quickly dismantled by Canyon’s defense and third-quarter execution. Defensively, the Eagles limited the Whitefaces to just 189 total yards of offense. Austin Turner showcased his versatility by anchoring the linebacker position with 10 total tackles and an interception to complement his offensive output.
For Hereford, Zack Galvan paced the ground attack with a team-best 84 rushing yards and a touchdown. While the final score reflected a steep challenge for the developing Whitefaces, Medley praised his squad’s resilience. “What I’m most proud of, is this is a team that doesn’t quit. They play hard on every snap,” Medley noted.
With the victory, Canyon head coach Matt Lovorn shifted immediate focus to maintaining momentum as district play unfolds. “It’s always big to get that first district win,” Lovorn stated. “We tell our guys all the time, let’s go be 1-0 this week, and now we’re doing it when it counts. We have to continue to up are level of play and have to keep focusing on ourselves.”
