China on Sunday launched the first of its kind “Wentian” laboratory module for the Chinese space station.

The new unit will serve as a backup copy of the basic unit and a powerful platform for scientific experiments, Xinhua news agency reported.

The Long March 5-BY3 carrier rocket, carrying the “Wentian” module, was launched from the Wenchang spacecraft launch site on the coast of the southern island province of Hainan, the manned space agency said.
