The information that Colombian President Gustavo Petro suffers from Asperger syndrome spread like wildfire after his brother, Juan Fernando Petro, said in an interview that they both suffer from this condition.
The constant breaches that he has had in different events and meetings, had led to the presumption that the president was in poor health, but they were denied by the circle closest to the president.
“When we were young, we were very funny people. But when adolescence began there was a brutal change both in him and in me. My dad took us to the psychologist and he told us that we had autism syndrome, Asperger’s,” Juan Fernando specified in the interview.
These statements, as expected, generated a tsunami of reactions and comments on different social networks, where several Internet users related Petro’s absences to this mental disorder.
After what was stated in an interview with the Los Informantes program, the relative of the head of state corrected himself and said that the doctor at the school where they both studied suggested, without examination, that Petro Urrego suffered from this syndrome.
“(…) The psychologist said, the school psychologist, one afternoon, without exams, without neurological studies, he simply said: ‘Ah, your brother also behaves similarly, he must have the same thing.’ It was in this sense that he said to himself, ”said Juan Fernando in dialogue with Blu Radio on Monday, September 4.
In this regard, he stated that what was stated in the Canal Caracol program was taken out of context and that they only focused on editing parts of that interview to deduce the diagnosis made of him and his brother.
“I was interviewed on the Los Informantes program under some conditions that ended up being others, and in that I do have to protest and make my voice clear (…) Because they totally decontextualized what was said and what was intended to be said,” explained the family member of the president before the aforementioned station.
