Consomac: iPhone: India also imposes USB-C

Smartphone manufacturers wishing to sell their products in India will have to use a USB-C standard charging port from March 2025, ruled the Bureau of Indian Standards this week. The news was announced in the Business Standardwhich clarifies that India should also soon tackle the wearables such as connected watches and bracelets without us knowing any additional details for the moment. Apple is not mentioned but it is of course the iPhone and its proprietary Lightning connector which is mainly targeted by the first phase of this new legislation.

The current Lightning connector

This announcement follows shortly the adoption of a European law along the same lines and which must enter into force December 28, 2024. Apple will have no choice but to submit to European law — Greg Joswiak also confirmed it — but European legislation does not extend beyond its borders: India wants to ensure that Apple will not be tempted to make USB-C cohabit in the European Union and Lightning outside .

According to rumors we have at the moment, Apple should start complying with this legislation as early as next year with its iPhone 15 line. The adoption of USB-C on the iPhone could be the opportunity to explode speeds, while the Lightning connector is limited to 480 Mbit/s: on the Pro models, Apple could integrate USB 3.2 or Thunderboltat 20 Gbit/s or 40 Gbit/s, for much faster wired transfers than today.
