Couple Arrested at Johor CIQ With RM3 Million Undeclared Cash Heading to Singapore

Three boxes, a paper bag, and a black backpack filled with nearly RM3 million in undeclared Malaysian and Singaporean currency brought a trip to a sudden halt at the Johor checkpoint on October 27, 2026. The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency detained a business-owning couple at the Sultan Iskandar Building after their white Toyota Alphard raised suspicions during routine checks.

The vehicle was heading toward Woodlands in Singapore when three agency officers flagged it down at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex at 11:40 a.m. During questioning, the driver exhibited suspicious behavior that prompted a comprehensive search of the storage compartments and passenger seating areas.

The search uncovered a heavy accumulation of physical wealth neatly tucked away from plain view. Officers pulled out RM1,971,697 in Malaysian ringgit alongside S$300,000 in Singapore currency. The total seizure amounted to approximately RM2.92 million.

The 42-year-old husband and his 41-year-old wife insisted to inspectors that they were traveling to Singapore for a holiday. Authorities, however, were still investigating why they were carrying such a large amount of cash.

Customs Regulations and the Ten Thousand Dollar Limit

Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency deputy director-general (operations) Datuk Mohd Nasaruddin M. Nasir outlined the strict legal thresholds governing cross-border monetary transit during a press briefing at the complex. Travelers carrying cash or monetary instruments equivalent to more than US$10,000—approximately RM40,000—must formally declare the sum to border authorities upon departure or entry.

Failure to submit this mandatory declaration may result in legal action. The agency confirmed that preliminary checks found no record of previous wrongdoing for either suspect.

Handover to the Customs Department and Pending Legal Action

Following the initial detention, the agency seized the multi-purpose vehicle and the cash. The case was formally transferred to the Customs Department for further action.
