Thanks to a high vaccination rate, diseases such as polio have been eradicated throughout Austria since 2002. Vaccinations against measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), whooping cough and human papilloma viruses (HPV) have also been tried and tested for a long time and can prevent the disease itself, severe disease progression or complications. That is why vaccinations are one of the most important and effective preventive medicine measures. As part of the European Vaccination Week from April 21st to 27th, “Long vaccination afternoons” will take place in all health authorities of the Tyrolean district authorities, the Innsbruck city council and the state health department. Advice as well as free MMR vaccinations for all age groups and free HPV vaccinations up to the age of 21 are offered. Information about all vaccination offers and the European Vaccination Week can be found at www.tirol.gv.at/impfen.

“We can all help to ensure that infectious diseases such as measles, whooping cough and HPV are sustainably contained. The ‘Tirol vaccination campaign’ includes 15 free vaccinations for all children up to the age of 15. This means that in Tyrol we offer a low-threshold, close-to-home opportunity to receive all recommended vaccinations in a timely manner all year round. These can be carried out by practicing doctors or as part of the free school vaccinations,” emphasizes State Health Councilor Cornelia Hagele and also refers to the “Long Vaccination Afternoons”: “I invite the people of Tyrol to take advantage of the offer of free MMR and HPV vaccinations up to 21 years of age as part of the European Vaccination Week: Get advice on which vaccinations you should catch up on or refresh.”

Effectively contain infectious diseases

At the beginning of the year, the number of measles cases increased significantly in Austria and Tyrol. Measles is a very contagious disease that can cause complications at any age and is particularly dangerous for children who become ill in their first year of life. With two vaccinations against measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) you are already considered protected. The WHO recommends 95 percent vaccination coverage – in Tyrol, around 85 percent of adolescents and young adults have received two MMR vaccinations. “The more people are protected, the more likely the spread of measles within the population can be prevented and particularly vulnerable groups can be protected. The most effective protection for yourself, but also for others, is an early, two-time MMR vaccination from the age of nine months, emphasizes Health Director Theresa Geley, pointing out that children under ten years of age and adults between the ages of 25 and 50 are currently inadequate are protected because in the past they were only vaccinated once. The MMR vaccination can be obtained free of charge at any time and at any interval by all age groups from the participating doctors in the “Tirol Vaccination Campaign”.

Check vaccination status and refresh protection

There are also currently many cases of whooping cough in Tyrol. Whooping cough is contagious for five to six weeks if left untreated, with the bacterium being transmitted via large droplets through coughing but also through smear infections. Complications such as pneumonia, middle ear infections, broken ribs or hernias can occur. The disease itself causes severe coughing attacks that can lead to vomiting and is particularly dangerous for newborns and infants up to six months of age due to respiratory arrest. A vaccination protects very well against illness or at least reduces the severity of the illness. Therefore, pregnant women in particular should be vaccinated against whooping cough at the beginning of the last trimester to protect the newborn and children at the beginning of the third month of life. Since the effectiveness of the vaccination decreases over the years, booster vaccinations should be given every ten years and, from the age of 60, every five years.

“Small children in particular are currently inadequately vaccinated against whooping cough, which is why we recommend checking the vaccination status and, if necessary, getting the third 6-fold vaccination against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, Haemophilus influenzae B and hepatitis B as soon as possible. The same applies to booster vaccinations in the third grade. For adequate vaccination protection, at least three vaccinations of the basic immunization as well as booster vaccinations are required,” explains the health director and points out that whooping cough vaccinations up to the age of 15 can be given free of charge by participating doctors in the “Vaccination Campaign Tyrol” as part of the quadruple vaccination can.
