For two more performances, the play “The Great Inquisitor” will be presented at the Machanurgeio, on February 17 (9 p.m.) and 18 (8.15 p.m.).

The Great Inquisitor is one of the chapters in the novel The Brothers Karamazov. Inside a cell, in 14th century Spain, in the darkest years of the Inquisition, the Jesuit priest will speak against the arrested Jesus and in the name of love for humanity, the word of great misanthropy.

He accuses Jesus of giving people the gift of freedom of conscience, a gift that in the hands of the weak and lewd, in the opinion of the human race, becomes a burden and is transformed into a weapon of destruction. All that remains for the Inquisitor is to take the Purple and the Sword of Caesar and take away man’s freedom, so that he can save him from himself by leading him to happiness.
