Glenmark Pharmaceuticals opens distribution center in Upper Macungie

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals has opened a 160,000-square-foot distribution center in Upper Macungie Township, Pennsylvania, establishing its largest distribution center in North America to manage around 90 million prescriptions, according to wfmz.com.

Facility Services 30 Companies and Millions of Prescriptions

  • Supply Chain Stability: Managing around 90 million prescriptions means approximately one out of every four Americans gets a product from this facility, significantly minimizing localized medication bottlenecks.
  • Distribution Footprint: The facility aggregates finished pharmaceutical products manufactured globally—including from a North Carolina plant—to service more than 30 companies.

Selecting Upper Macungie for North American Operations

Company leadership evaluated about 130 properties spanning several states before committing to the Lehigh Valley region. “We reviewed about 130 properties across several states. Allentown stood out as the right home based on the talented workforce, the strong logistics network, and our proximity to our customers and U.S. headquarters,” said Ravi Kannan, site head of Glenmark Pharmaceuticals’ Upper Macungie distribution center, as reported by wfmz.com.

The facility currently employs 45 workers managing high-volume logistical tasks. “These jobs are not only distribution, working in the warehouse, picking and packing, but it’s also in quality, releasing quality product to make sure they comply with all the FDA regulations,” said Marc Kikuchi, Glenmark’s North America president, according to wfmz.com.

Business Demands Likely Necessitate Further Regional Expansion

The newly operational site handles finished pharmaceutical products sourced from international manufacturing plants as well as domestic sites, such as a plant in North Carolina. Glenmark leadership indicates that ongoing business demands will likely necessitate further regional expansion.

“Right now, we’re looking to expand our presence in North Carolina, that manufacturing facility, and here in the next three years we expect to outgrow this facility, so we’ll look for expansion opportunities as business needs arise,” Kikuchi stated, as reported by wfmz.com. To manage immediate operational demands, the company also plans to increase local hiring around the holidays.
