The Government of Guyana once again committed itself to peacefully resolving with Venezuela the historic territorial dispute over 160,000 square kilometers west of the Essequibo River.

The affirmation of the Guyanese government comes after its president, Mohamed Irfaan Ali, pointed out on September 21 that the territorial sovereignty of his country has been called into question “by Venezuela.”

In that sense, he added that Guyana will continue to defend peaceful conflict resolution processes and will “refuse any effort to deviate from them.”

“The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has already reasserted its jurisdiction in the matter,” he said.

However, last Friday the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry accused Guyana of misrepresenting and manipulating information about the historic territorial dispute.

“The persistent and false accusations that Guyana has been uttering since 2015 before the UN General Assembly are unacceptable, a year that coincides with the moment in which the oil transnationals decide to invade undelimited waters,” the Chavista Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“In the matter of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Guyana, challenged and threatened by Venezuela, we remain committed to doing the most of any diplomatic tool to achieve a peaceful settlement of disputes, such as status in the United Nations,” Ali said.

However, Nicolás Maduro rejected the alleged false representations and manipulations of the controversy.
