A femicide causes shock in Britain. A man murdered his wife, dismembered her and hid her body parts in their apartment for a week before dumping them in plastic bags in a river.
The court was told that “evil monster” Nicholas Mattson, 28, had joked when authorities were looking for her, telling officers she “might be hiding under the bed”.
The remains of 26-year-old Holly Bramley were finally found eight days after she was last seen. The court was told Mattson had a history of abusing animals, and the Mail reveals the sadistic killer had previously punished his wife by killing their pets in gruesome fashion.
Put the puppy in the washing machine and the hamsters in the blender
A source said the man put the 26-year-old’s puppy in the washing machine, leaving his wife to discover the dead dog inside with the drum still spinning.
The 26-year-old had confided that her partner had killed her hamsters by putting them in a blender and microwave, while at one point she had gone to the police station with her rabbits to escape his rage.
The same source said Holly Bramley “never explained why she had done it”, and said she believed the woman was “controlling and subservient” to her husband.
“She told us she loved him, but the first time I met him, I took an instant dislike to him,” the source continued. “There was just something strange about him.”
“What benefits do I get if my wife dies”
The court was told the couple – who had been married for just 16 months – were on the verge of splitting up when Mattson stabbed her in their flat.
He then searched the internet for: “What benefits do I get if my wife dies” and “Can someone haunt me after they die?”
The killer’s past
The court was told that Mattson had been charged in 2013 with assaulting a previous partner. Also in 2016, Mattson was charged with three offenses related to the disclosure of private photos of another ex-partner. A year later, Mattson admitted to a probation violation related to the same victim.
Prosecutor Gordon Aspden QC said police launched a murder investigation after parts of Holly Bramley’s body were found in the River Witham – 10 miles from her Lincoln flat – in March last year.
Lincolnshire Police had received a call expressing concern for the 26-year-old’s safety on March 24 and when Mattson finally answered the door, he claimed he had been the victim of a domestic assault by his wife the previous weekend, showing officers a bite mark which, as the judge was told, was probably caused by the 26-year-old while trying to defend herself at the time she was murdered.
The saw in the kitchen
The prosecutor said there were bloodstained sheets in the bathroom and a saw on the kitchen floor, while the apartment smelled strongly of bleach.
Mattson claimed he had no idea where his wife was and told a bunch of lies, including that she had left the house five days earlier with women from a local mental health support group.
Police conducted another search of the apartment later that day. Lincoln Crown Court was told the saw had been moved into a cupboard “but there was no sign of Holly”.
The prosecutor added: “At one point, the man joked that his wife might be hiding under the bed.”
Mattson was arrested on suspicion of murder, but did not cooperate with police during questioning. Garden pruners, two knives and a hammer were also seized from the house.
How the body was discovered
At 6pm on March 25, a citizen noticed several plastic bags in the River Witham in Bassingham, a village 10 miles away, and opened one of the bags. Inside was a severed hand.
Police divers recovered 224 remains of the 26-year-old’s body from the bags, including her shaved head. It took more than 13 hours for the medical examiner to complete the autopsy, but the dismemberment was so extensive that he was ultimately unable to determine the exact cause of death.
The prosecutor said security cameras from the home where Mattson and Bramley lived recorded him using the apartment building’s elevator to move bags, with the help of a supermarket trolley, from their 14th-floor apartment to his car on in the early hours of March 25, and later withdrew £50 from his wife’s bank account.
He said: “The most likely scenario is that Mattson murdered Holly in the bedroom, dismembered her body in the bathtub and then stored the body parts in the kitchen cupboard, before bagging her remains.”
The court was told Mattson had recruited his school friend Joshua Hancock, also 28, to help him dispose of Holly Bramley’s dismembered body.
The next day, March 26, a message on Hancock’s phone said “just got £50 to get rid of a body”.
Mattson met Holly in college and their relationship began in 2016.
The 26-year-old’s mother, Annette Bramley, read an emotional statement in court, describing Mattson as a “satanic monster” who condemned the family to a “lifetime of grief”.
Mrs Bramley said Mattson’s controlling and coercive behavior had also deprived the family of contact with Holly in recent years.
Mattson pleaded guilty to murder last month. Hancock, also 28, pleaded guilty to obstructing the coroner by helping Mattson dispose of the body.
The killer’s defense attorney, Alison Summers, argued that Mattson’s diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder was a factor in the killing and said there was no evidence of premeditation or intent to kill.
“Something compelled this man to do this extremely extreme act,” Ms Summer argued.
Mattson and Hancock will be arraigned on Monday.
