Instagram Launches Dedicated Apple TV App for Reels and Live Streams

Instagram has launched a dedicated Apple TV app, bringing short-form reels, long-form videos, and live broadcasts straight to the living room screen. Requiring tvOS 26.0 or higher, the app marks Meta’s latest push to transition its mobile-first video ecosystem into traditional home viewing environments.

The Living Room Shift for Social Video

  • Apple TV users can now download the native Instagram app directly from the tvOS App Store, provided their hardware runs version 26.0 or higher.
  • The platform supports a unified viewing experience across reels, long-form creator content, and live streams, moving beyond the vertical phone screen.
  • Meta’s living room expansion follows previous rollouts on Amazon Fire TV, Google TV, and Samsung Smart TVs.

From Fire TV to the Apple Ecosystem

Meta’s strategy to conquer the television set has expanded. Following initial testing on Amazon’s Fire TV in December last year, the social media giant expanded its living room footprint to Google TV in February and Samsung Smart TVs in June. Now, Apple TV has joined that roster.

According to app metadata uncovered by MacRumors, version 66.0 of the app appeared on the Apple TV App Store on October 23. Just four days prior, App Store records indicated compatibility solely with iPhones and iPads. This rapid deployment bridges a notable gap for Apple device users who previously lacked a native living room interface for the platform.

The timing closely follows Meta’s broader push into long-form and episodic creator content. When Meta outlined its expansion beyond micro-clips in June, the company aimed to increase long-form creator content, episodic series, and live broadcasts. The Apple TV app’s interface specifically highlights creator-driven series alongside standard vertical feeds.

Meta Brings Algorithmic Viewing to the Living Room

Unlike the solitary experience of scrolling through a smartphone on a commute, Meta positions the Apple TV integration around shared viewing. Digital Trends noted that the interface encourages families and friends to gather around larger displays rather than staring at individual mobile screens.

Yet, this shift suggests that modern media consumption habits are changing. The same algorithmic pull that keeps users glued to short vertical clips for hours on a handheld device now scales up to the living room television. It is unclear whether evening routines will permanently incorporate algorithmic social feeds alongside traditional prestige television.

Platform Initial Rollout Window Primary Focus
Amazon Fire TV December Reels / Automated Channels
Google TV February Reels / Creator Content
Samsung Smart TV June Living Room Integration
Apple TV October 23 Reels, Long-Form, Live Broadcasts

The broader rollout also mirrors Instagram’s measured approach to hardware expansion. It took years of user requests before the platform finally released a dedicated iPad application in September last year. Bringing the software to Apple TV completes a hardware circle, ensuring creators reach audiences regardless of whether they hold a tablet, phone, or television remote.

As software updates require tvOS 26.0 or higher, adoption will depend on how quickly households update their streaming hardware. For now, the living room couch becomes just another venue for the endless scroll.
