Investing in Healthcare: Recommendations from the European Covid Commission

“To do this, additional investments are essential, both in good teaching infrastructures and in staff, digitization and digital education”, underlined the president of this commission, the Belgian MEP Kathleen Van Brempt ( S&D, Vooruit).

Established a little over a year ago, the “Covid” commission calls on the European Commission and the Member States to invest more structurally in healthcare establishments. “We need to invest in emergency capacities. We need more staff around the beds, and the working conditions of health care staff need to be improved,” insists Ms Van Brempt.

The joint purchases of vaccines and the European vaccination strategy are described as a success, although the report also notes the lack of transparency on vaccine contracts and negotiations with manufacturers.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has long been the target of criticism over negotiations with Pfizer boss Albert Bourla, whose association with German lab BioNTech secured the largest deliveries.

Albert Bourla twice refused to appear before the parliamentary committee, while no agreement was reached on a hearing of the German, which the European People’s Party (EPP) would have prevented.

The committee report also calls on the European Commission to support the emergence, at global level, of a robust treaty on pandemic prevention and response, within the framework of the World Health Organisation. (WHO).
