A Midnight Escape and a 100-Mile Trail
Jacob Morley slipped out of a Tennessee prison in a state-issue uniform late Sunday, taking a prison work truck that would eventually turn up in a small Illinois town.
Morley, 28, was serving a life sentence at the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville, Tennessee, when prison staff realized he was missing sometime before 11:30 p.m. Sunday. Security footage later showed him breaching the prison’s perimeter fence. By early Tuesday morning, the stolen work truck was discovered abandoned behind a business in Marion, Illinois, roughly 100 miles north of the facility.
Zero Evidence in Marion
Investigators in Marion have found no evidence around the vehicle and zero reports of other stolen cars in the municipality of 16,000 residents. Police Chief David Fitts noted that Morley has no known connections to southern Illinois, leading investigators to believe the fugitive pushed further outward.

“What we have seen kind of leads us in the direction that he’s not still here. But that doesn’t mean that we’ve stopped looking,” Fitts said, pointing out that Interstates 57 runs directly through the town and may have simply offered a convenient exit for a driver running low on fuel.
A Conviction for a 2022 Killing
Morley’s violent criminal history has heightened urgency across multiple jurisdictions. A Tennessee jury convicted him in February 2025 of first-degree murder, abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence, and aggravated burglary, alongside a separate guilty plea for theft of property. Court documents from the case detail the 2022 killing of his co-worker, Cody Birchfield, who was shot in the back of the head. Birchfield’s body was later recovered from a large metal box hidden underneath Morley’s residence.
Old Wounds Reopened
For Birchfield’s family, the sudden escape forces a painful reopening of old wounds. Carrie Norman, the victim’s sister, described the ongoing ordeal to nbcnews.com as feeling like a “scary movie.” The family is forced to relive the trauma, she noted, because of the uncertainty surrounding Morley’s whereabouts and his proven capabilities.
Ramped-Up Pressure and a $15,000 Reward
Federal and state authorities have significantly ramped up pressure to locate the fugitive. The reward for information leading to Morley’s arrest climbed to $15,000 on Wednesday, pooled from the Tennessee governor’s office, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, and the U.S. Marshals Service.
While law enforcement agencies continue combing leads, Chief Fitts cautioned residents against taking matters into their own hands. Officials urge anyone who spots the fugitive to immediately dial 911 rather than approach him, as the investigation into how he successfully breached the Tennessee prison perimeter remains ongoing.
