Jacquelin Chng has opened up about the hidden pressures of marrying into immense wealth, revealing that high-society wives often have to avoid shopping areas to dodge their husband’s mistresses. The 46-year-old media personality recently appeared in a video alongside her CEO friend and social media content creator Wing Lee to discuss the realities behind wealthy marriages, her own past relationships, and her current romance with senior police inspector Matthew Wong.
The conversation turned toward why Chng avoided marrying into extreme wealth during her past relationships. She explained that ultra-wealthy executives and business magnates tend to be highly subjective, overly controlling, and consumed by their careers, leaving little time or emotional bandwidth for their partners. Wing Lee agreed with the assessment, noting that she has witnessed high-society wives who see their husbands only once a year and tolerate infidelity just to maintain their opulent lifestyles.
Wealthy Socialite Avoids Specific Individual at Shopping Mall
Expanding on the theme of high-society marriages, Chng shared an anecdote about an acquaintance from a prominent family who possesses a fortune valued in the billions. While dining with the wealthy socialite in a shopping mall, the woman abruptly received a call from her husband’s secretary delivering a warning.
According to Chng, the secretary told the wife that a specific individual was heading to the same retail center and advised her to exercise caution. The socialite’s demeanor immediately darkened, and she told Chng that she would have to bypass shopping entirely and head straight to the parking garage. Chng realized that because the husband’s other partner was visiting the mall, the legal wife had to alter her plans to avoid an awkward encounter.
Chng noted that while marrying into such status brings luxury and prestige, the psychological toll is immense. She pointed out that wives in those circles often live under constant stress, receiving unexpected phone calls instructing them to leave public spaces to prevent unwanted confrontations. Wing Lee added that social gatherings with these affluent acquaintances often revolve entirely around material possessions, such as newly acquired jewelry, rather than genuine marital companionship.
Dating Disappointments With Wealthy Suitors
Beyond her observations of high-society peers, Chng detailed her own frustrating experiences with wealthy suitors before finding stability in her current relationship. She recalled turning to a wealthy executive who was pursuing her when she encountered a professional crisis, asking if he could introduce someone to help resolve the issue. The suitor brushed off the request as trivial, telling her not to bother him with such minor matters.
On another occasion, Chng faced a severe typhoon while preparing to travel for work and needed transportation to the airport as soon as the storm warning was lowered. Unable to secure a ride anywhere, she contacted the same wealthy suitor to ask if his driver was working. Although the driver was available, the suitor—whose residence was located just a 15-minute drive away—never offered to send assistance, leaving her deeply disappointed by his lack of consideration.
Chng also described an instance where she agreed to meet a successful businessman for a dinner date, only for the man to arrive four hours late due to a meeting. Left waiting alone in the restaurant until closing time, she finally called off the engagement and walked out, resolving never to tolerate being treated with such disregard.
Reflecting on her upbringing, Chng credited her parents for giving her the freedom to make her own relationship choices without pushing her toward arranged matches with wealthy peers. Today, she maintains a grounded perspective on romance, emphasizing that genuine mutual affection remains the foundation of her current life with Matthew Wong.
