Joshua Kerry, a 28-year-old man from Rotherham, appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday accused of preparing terrorist acts and murdering Ann Widdecombe, BBC reported.
Court Details Alleged Hostility and Reconnaissance
During Wednesday’s court appearance, prosecutor Kashif Malik told Westminster Magistrates’ Court that Joshua Kerry carried out online reconnaissance on prominent people and institutions between 31 May 2024 and 8 July 2026, as reported by The Journal. The court heard that the accused had a “particular hostility to Reform”.
Prosecutors detailed an alleged attempt to breach Nigel Farage’s south London home on 20 April last year. Mr. Farage’s partner, Laure Ferrari, returned home to discover damage to the front door, along with a bottle of lighter fluid left in the porch. Mr. Malik noted that a tool mark from a 27mm blade was found on the door frame, and that “the inference is that an attempt was made to gain entry to the house”.
Counter-terrorism police originally investigated that incident as an attempted burglary before closing the case. In August, however, the Metropolitan Police and Counter Terrorism Policing London reopened the probe after identifying a fresh line of inquiry.
The Murder Charge and Broader Political Security
The charges extend to the death of 78-year-old Ann Widdecombe. As detailed by The Guardian, Ms. Widdecombe died in July after sustaining multiple hammer blows at her home in Haytor on Dartmoor, Devon. A court previously heard she was struck over the head 21 times.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated that the charge raised “serious questions” about the security of MPs. Writing on social media, she emphasized that an attack on anyone in politics constitutes an attack on the wider democratic system and pledged to update Parliament on strengthened protection measures.
