Kylian Mbappe scored two goals to lift Real Madrid to a 2-1 victory over Barcelona at the Camp Nou on Sunday. The win halts Barcelona’s nine-game domestic unbeaten run, closes the gap at the top of La Liga to three points, and places Real manager Jose Mourinho alongside club legends for an undefeated streak in El Clasico.
Jose Mourinho delivered another tactical masterclass on Sunday, celebrating Kylian Mbappe’s late winner with a trademark knee slide in front of Barcelona supporters at the Spotify Camp Nou. The victory brings Real Madrid to within three points of their rivals as Mourinho’s side capitalized on a dramatic finish.
Kylian Mbappe Secures The Late Winner In The 87th Minute
Jude Bellingham orchestrated a brilliant buildup before Eduardo Camavinga delivered a cutback. Mbappe tucked the ball home in the 87th minute. This sealed a famous 2-1 Clasico triumph that silenced the home crowd and handed Hansi Flick’s squad their first domestic defeat of the campaign.
The visiting side had taken the lead earlier in the first half through a bizarre sequence. Following a fine team move by the visitors, Gerard Martin attempted a clearance that slammed directly off Mbappe and into the net. Barcelona responded after the halftime break when Pedri threaded a pass to Raphinha, whose snapshot beat goalkeeper Andriy Lunin to level the score at 1-1.
Jose Mourinho Enters Rare Club History With Six Consecutive El Clasicos Without Defeat
The result extends Mourinho’s personal record against the Catalan club. Returning to Real this summer thirteen years after his initial stint, the Portuguese manager has now gone six El Clasicos in a row without a defeat. That achievement places him alongside Miguel Munoz and Vicente del Bosque as Real managers who have gone six in a row without defeat against the old enemy.
In my view, Real Madrid do not play to win at the Camp Nou, Real Madrid play to win La Liga.
Jose Mourinho, Real Madrid manager
Mourinho emphasized the collective effort of his squad following the final whistle, noting that the team executed their plan with calmness and merit. He praised the tactical balance provided by his midfield setup, which integrated diverse player characteristics to secure stability on defense and fluidity going forward.
Hansi Flick Points To Fatigue As Barcelona’s Unbeaten Streak Ends
For Barcelona, the defeat halted an 11-game winning streak at the start of the season across all competitions that had only recently been dented by a Champions League loss against Paris Saint-Germain. Barcelona boss Hansi Flick admitted that his squad simply ran out of energy after a grueling stretch of fixtures.
It’s not easy for our players. We have to recover well, train well and we have to respond from this defeat.
