“It was a joke when I said I blamed you. It was stupid,” Martha Stewart declared during a sitdown on the Today show, setting the record straight on a Halloween costume controversy that landed her in hot water.
Lifestyle Magnate Issues Apology for Holiday Photo
The lifestyle magnate appeared on the NBC morning program to issue another public apology, clarifying once and for all that morning anchor Craig Melvin bore no responsibility for her choice of holiday attire. On Oct. 31, Stewart posted and swiftly deleted a photograph of herself wearing torn, disheveled clothing while holding a makeshift sign that read, “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!” The image, captured on a pristine porch accompanied by her immaculately groomed chow and French bulldog, drew immediate and sharp backlash for its insensitivity.
The backlash was so pronounced that even her grandson warned her before the photo went live that the concept was tone-deaf. Stewart admitted during her Friday broadcast that she had thrown the outfit together at the last minute because she was too busy to plan a proper costume ahead of a weekend party.

Anchor Spills Chocolate on White Sweater During Segment
The confusion deepened earlier in the week when Stewart spoke at a CrossCountry Mortgage Sales Rally in Orlando, Florida. During that engagement, she pointed the finger at Melvin, claiming a spilled chocolate incident on the Today show set forced her hand. On Oct. 30, Stewart had worn a white sweater featuring an American flag and Olympic rings to match Melvin, who was dressed as Olympic superfan and ambassador Snoop Dogg. During a cake-decorating segment following the broadcast, Melvin accidentally spilled chocolate on the sweater.
Clearing the Air on National Television
“Why was I dragged into it?” Melvin questioned Stewart during her Friday morning appearance.
“I was making a joke,” Stewart responded. “I was giving a talk and I just made a joke that you had spilled chocolate on me so I couldn’t wear that costume, which I had planned to wear on Halloween night to this party.”
Melvin confirmed that he had apologized for the chocolate spill when it happened, noting that both parties had simply moved on. To clear the air completely, Stewart reiterated that the spill had zero connection to her later costume choice, telling the anchor directly, “Oh, no, no, no. It wasn’t your fault.”

Broader Fallout and Social Awareness
While the blame has officially been lifted from Melvin, Stewart acknowledged that the situation forced her to pay closer attention to social issues. She stressed to viewers that she needs to pay closer attention to social issues moving forward. Stewart expressed hope that the new administration takes substantial steps to repair damage and better care for the poor, the hungry, and vulnerable populations.
“I’m aware of all those social issues, as you can imagine, and I care desperately about all the problems facing us,” Stewart said. “But I made a mistake. I mean, I was stupid. … I’m so sorry, and I hope that my followers and my fans and the rest of America forgives me for doing something that was not meant in any way to be a bad thing.”
“I apologize because I was not making fun of anybody or making light of the great problems that face our country,” she added.
