Scorsese is working on a film about Jesus

Hollywood director Scorcese has memorialized many personalities in his films. He seems to be aiming very high with his possible next project: It could be about Jesus, as he says on a visit to the Vatican.

Martin Scorsese attended the Aesthetics of Catholic Imagination conference at the Vatican over the weekend. The director, screenwriter and producer is said to have promised a film about Jesus. As reported by Variety, among others, he is said to have explained to those present: “I responded to the Pope’s appeal to artists in the only way I know of: by thinking up and writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus.” He is already in the process of starting production, the director added, hinting that it could be his next film.

The conference was organized by the Jesuit journal La Civiltà Cattolica and Georgetown University. Pope Francis is said to have met the participants, as did Scorsese, who was visiting the Vatican with wife Helen Morris and daughter Francesca, as did Antonio Spadaro, editor of the religious magazine, stated in a tweet.

Born in New York, Martin Scorsese actually wanted to be a priest, but this did not work out after he was expelled from the Jesuit school. Instead, in 1960, he enrolled to study cinematography at New York University, paving the way for Hollywood. To this day he is considered a devout Catholic. His newly announced film about Jesus would not be the director’s first project about religion and Jesus. “The Last Temptation of Christ” from 1988 provoked angry protests among conservative Christians.

Pope Francis had the state of society on the occasion of Pentecost. “In today’s world there is so much strife, so great divisions. We are all connected and yet separated from each other, numbed by indifference, oppressed by loneliness,” said the head of the Catholic Church on Sunday in St. Peter’s Basilica. “So many wars, so many conflicts: it seems unbelievable what evil man can do!” He could have exchanged ideas with the director of gangster films like “Good Fellas”, “Casino” or “Departed”.
