The fire broke out for an unknown reason on a mound of metal waste, within the company Belgian Scrap Terminal, located on the Bommsesteenweg (the N177). The latter was closed to traffic due to the release of smoke, as well as to allow the emergency services to circulate more easily. The nearby A12 motorway remains accessible.

Around 8:15 a.m., firefighters in the Rivierenland area announced that the fire was contained, but not yet completely under control.
“We are asking residents to keep windows and doors closed,” police said.
