Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson appeared to be one half of the Drug Couple to have left his old life and solo career behind him… coming from nowhere until now, a whopping decade and a half after the second studio album Summer of Fearsuddenly a single called Lonesome, Handsome Man appears under his own name.
An event that you didn’t have to have on your personal 2024 bingo, but that coincides with the return of Thursday is actually already ahead when it comes to the most surprising single comeback surprises of the year.
Because so much one Stoned Weekend (2022) and his satellites may have taken to his heart, Miles’ own solo work – with two of the best albums of the 10s – is still in a different league than the happy adventures of the Robinson couple Drug Couple. And here sets Lonesome, Handsome Man not only in terms of quality, but also finds a balance with a healthy charisma that goes beyond the destructive streak of yore Summer of Fear passing by the attitude of the brilliant self-titled debut from 2008.
Robinson starts as producer (apparently even without his TV on the Radio– and Grizzly Bear-Colleagues) use the studio flair spontaneously and with organic nonchalance, making himself the demonstrative center of the song’s content and letting the instruments tumble around his vocals as if instinctively. Relaxed drums rumble and a piano tinkles, the bass hangs low and later the relaxed groove chimes to free folk. The charismatic vocal line only seems underwhelming at first glance, but in its slightly off-the-track catchiness, it sticks with you more endearingly with every passage, growing and living above all from the sound, which is a bit disordered, quirky and instinctively basically a classic Robinson song allows it to thrive, conveys something unpredictable and exciting, grounded and approachable. As if the well-maintained melody could get out of hand at any time. Only all of this is somehow healthier and less self-chastising than on the first album.
Where others would head for opulence, Miles frays in charming chaos, only hinting at the excess with rough edges. In the context of an entire album would Lonesome, Handsome Man (at least in the current euphoria that this return triggers) still seems to be blossoming to the point where it could be part of a second Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson masterpiece. Standing on its own, it is a magnificent sign of life, harkening back to bygone days without nostalgia and bringing them up to date.
