Montargis Rioter Sentenced to Two Years in Prison for Setting Pharmacy on Fire

A twenty-year-old man convicted of torching a local pharmacy during the violent urban unrest that swept France in the summer of 2023 was sentenced to two years in prison by the Montargis children’s court, France 3 Régions reported.

A Symbol of Urban Upheaval Facing the Bench

The case centers on the destruction of the Mirabeau pharmacy in Montargis, an establishment whose fiery collapse during the night of June 29 to June 30, 2023, became an enduring image of the riots. The unrest erupted nationwide following the fatal police shooting of 17-year-old Nahel during a traffic stop in Nanterre. In Montargis, a town sometimes called the Venice of the Gâtinais, roughly 200 rioters caused extensive devastation within hours, destroying three buildings and damaging 80 shops, six of which were looted, according to Le Figaro.

The defendant, who was 17 at the time of the offense, was identified through video surveillance footage showing him pouring the flammable liquid that ignited the blaze, as detailed by former Montargis public prosecutor Jean-Cédric Gaux. Following his indictment on July 8, 2023, the adolescent admitted during police custody to setting the fire, though he maintained he never intended such catastrophic consequences and that the act was entirely unpremeditated.

Divergent Legal Arguments Over Intent and Mental Age

When the case finally went to trial on September 29, 2026, stark legal divisions emerged in the courtroom. The prosecutor pushed for a severe punitive response, demanding a seven-year prison sentence. That aggressive stance drew sharp criticism from the defense.

Maître Eric Plouvier, representing the young man, argued that psychological evaluations conducted ahead of the trial placed his client’s mental age at roughly eight and a half years old, leaving him on the very threshold of criminal discernment. Describing the prosecution’s initial demand as a display of excessive and fierce repressiveness, Plouvier contended that the eventual two-year prison sentence provided a measured judicial counterweight to the state’s demands.

Meanwhile, civil parties struck a different chord regarding the penalty. Maître Alexandre Lavillat, representing the Mirabeau pharmacy and its managers, called the two-year outcome very lenient given the severity of the damage, suggesting that a suspended prison sentence might otherwise have sufficed to signal accountability.

An Imminent Return to Liberty and a Prosecutor’s Appeal

Because the defendant already spent nearly two years behind bars under pre-trial detention, the two-year fixed prison sentence means he will have served the vast majority of his time, leaving prison authorities to calculate his exact remaining days. Alongside the prison term, the court handed down a five-year prohibition on possessing a firearm, as reported by ici.fr.

The legal battle is far from over. Montargis prosecutor Christophe Salort confirmed that the parquet has decided to appeal the children’s court ruling, setting the stage for a new trial for the young man. Additionally, the court scheduled a separate hearing for April 8, 2027, to examine the financial compensation the defendant must pay to civil parties.
