Morocco-UK Electricity Link Megaproject: Xlinks and British Government Collaborate for Clean Energy Transition

The British government strongly supports the Morocco-UK electricity link megaproject, the construction of which is being carried out by the London startup Xlinks. This was announced by Xlinks in a press release dated July 28.

“We are very grateful to the UK government for their time and dedication to this project which is a key solution to accelerating the country’s transition to clean energy sources,” said Simon Morrish, CEO of Xlinks. Which has repeatedly highlighted Morocco’s role as a solid and trusted partner in securing Britain’s energy supply.

This support is crucial, in the eyes of the official, insofar as it constitutes a boost to his company in order to achieve its ambition: that of “providing British households with secure, affordable and green energy, in the face of the climate crisis increasing”.

With an overall cost estimated at 200 billion dirhams, or approximately 16 billion pounds sterling, this project aims to produce 3.6 gigawatts (GW) of electricity from renewable energies produced in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region. The objective is to meet 8% of the European country’s energy needs to supply around seven million households by 2030, but also to completely decarbonize the electricity system by 2035. On the Moroccan side, several experts believe that this project should benefit from the incentive scheme of the new Investment Charter.

It should be noted that the clean electricity produced in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region, in solar and wind farms with a capacity of 10.5 GW, will be transported via four high voltage direct current (HVDC) submarine cables ) of 3,800 km.
