MSC Expands Far East-South America Service with New 10,300TEU Vessel

Global ocean carriers are rapidly deploying new-build container ships onto Asia-Latin America trade routes, driven by surging export volumes between China and South American economies. According to shipping publication Ocean Press, industry analysts note that this capacity expansion reflects strong, sustained bilateral trade growth.

New Ship Deliveries Target Key Latin American Services

Shipyards are actively handing over ultra-large and mid-sized container vessels to major lines servicing South American corridors.

The vessel enters the carrier’s standalone “Carioca” route connecting the Far East with South America’s east coast, where MSC already deploys 15 ships ranging from 8,000 to 12,000 TEUs.

Additional deliveries further crowd the trans-Pacific and Latin American lanes. China’s New Times Shipbuilding handed over the 8,454-TEU CMA CGM Austral to Singapore-based owner Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS). Chartered long-term to CMA CGM, the ship deploys directly onto the Far East-Mexico (M2X) service. Simultaneously, South Korea’s HJ Newcorp delivered the 7,900-TEU Garnet to the TMS Group for deployment on the newly established Far East-South America East Coast (ZFS) service, a joint operation between ZIM and Hapag-Lloyd connecting major Chinese ports with Brazilian terminals.

Rising Cross-Continental Cargo Movement Drives Trade Flows

Behind this influx of new tonnage lies a steady climb in cross-continental cargo movement.

Trade flows remain heavily weighted toward industrial exports from Asia paired with raw commodities from the Southern Hemisphere. China supplies South American markets with machinery, electrical and electronic equipment, and telecommunications infrastructure, while importing substantial volumes of agricultural goods and mineral resources.

Vessel Name Capacity (TEU) Shipyard Assigned Service Route
ONE Symphony 13,932 Imabari Shipbuilding AX3 (Asia – South America West Coast)
MSC Licia X 10,300 Zhoushan Changhong International Carioca (Far East – South America East Coast)
CMA CGM Austral 8,454 New Times Shipbuilding M2X (Far East – Mexico)
Garnet 7,900 HJ Newcorp ZFS (Far East – South America East Coast)

Industry forecasts indicate that this structural trade dynamic will persist through the near term, ensuring that major container lines maintain their focus on expanding fleet capacity and refining service networks across the Pacific and South American basins.
