More than 100,000 people are demonstrating in the capital against Putin’s war of aggression in Ukraine.

Berlin More than 100,000 people took to the streets in Berlin on Sunday against the war in Ukraine. About an hour after the beginning of the demonstration, the police spoke of a number of participants in the lower six-digit range. At the same time, the influx from the surrounding area continues.
The area between the Brandenburg Gate and the Victory Column is already fully utilized under Corona conditions. That is why the demonstration area will be extended to the Tiergarten S-Bahn station and the other streets around the Victory Column on the Großer Stern.
An alliance of trade unions, churches, initiatives, environmental protection organizations and peace groups had called for a demonstration against Russia’s attack. The organizers were initially surrounded by 20,000 participants under the motto: “Stop the war. Peace for Ukraine and All Europe”.
In Russia, too, people took to the streets to demonstrate against the war in Ukraine. The protests came as President Vladimir Putin, in a confrontation with the West, ordered Russia’s nuclear forces – which he described as a nuclear deterrent – to be placed on high alert. Demonstrators shouted “No to war!”.

Anti-war protests began Thursday after Russian troops invaded Ukraine. Hundreds of demonstrators have been arrested every day since then. Sunday’s protests appear smaller than Thursday’s, when thousands rallied in Moscow and St. Petersburg. However, the true extent was difficult to assess.

In St. Petersburg, where dozens gathered in the city center, police officers grabbed one after the other and dragged them into police vehicles – although the demonstration was peaceful and there were no clashes. Human rights group OWD Info, which monitors the protests, said as of Sunday afternoon there had been at least 356 arrests at anti-war rallies in 32 Russian cities.
