The New York Knicks are catching an injury break ahead of Sunday’s matchup at Madison Square Garden, as Orlando Magic power forward Paolo Banchero has been ruled out due to a high ankle sprain.
Banchero sustained the injury during the fourth quarter of Friday’s loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. As the Magic’s leading scorer, his absence alters the dynamic for both 0-2 squads entering Sunday’s contest.
How Banchero’s Absence Changes the Floor for Orlando
Earlier in the week during an opening-night loss to the Atlanta Hawks, Banchero dropped 35 points on an efficient 10-for-12 shooting performance.
Both teams enter Sunday night desperate to notch their first victory of the young season. The Magic sit at 0-2 following their setback against Minnesota, while the Knicks are also winless after falling to the Boston Celtics on Friday.
That defeat makes the Knicks the first defending champions to drop their first two games of a season since the Dallas Mavericks accomplished the feat in 2011.
PAOLO BANCHERO IS OUT 4-6 WEEKS AND THE MAGIC COME TO THE GARDEN TOMORROW NIGHT…Low-grade high ankle sprain per Shams…Get well soon Paolo… genuinely…But the reigning champs are 0-2… the excuses are gone…No more rust talk… no more "stuck in the mud"…You do…

Knicks Focus on Five-Game Segments to Regroup
Despite the slow start to their title defense, Knicks coach Mike Brown emphasized a compartmentalized approach to the schedule.
“We break the season into five-game segments,” Knicks coach Mike Brown said before New York’s comeback fell short in Boston. “There are marks that we like to hit in those five games and it kind of gives us a good feel of where you were, in a fair amount of games, and to see if you can make progress in the next five.”
Brown noted that while a 5-0 start is the ultimate goal, teams generally have to accept 4-1 or 3-2 stretches as they build rhythm.
“Obviously you want to go 5-0, you’ll take 4-1, and then maybe you have to take 3-2,” Brown said. “But if you’re doing anything less than that, you know that nobody is reaching their potential.”
What Lies Ahead at Madison Square Garden
With Banchero sidelined by his high ankle sprain, the Orlando Magic will have to restructure their rotation on the road against a New York squad eager to avoid falling to 0-3. Sunday’s tip-off at Madison Square Garden provides both teams an immediate opportunity to secure their first win of the campaign.
