Parking Fiasco in Lier: Unfair Fines and Rigorous Procedures Spark Citizen Outrage

His visit to Lier left a sour taste for Guy, a 64-year-old Belgian from Ranst, Flanders. On May 11, he went there for a drink with a friend and parked his car in a street just before. “I parked in the Berlaarsestraat, but I didn’t know which parking zone the parking lot was in. LRE2 or LRE3? This is what you have to enter in the 4111 parking application, ”explains Guy in the columns of the Gazet van Antwerpen. “So I went to the parking meter to check and immediately made the payment on the app,” he adds.

Guy’s payment was recorded at 3:09 p.m. He paid 2.80 euros to be able to stay parked until 4:52 p.m. But on returning to his car after drinking his drink, Guy had a very bad surprise. He had a parking ticket on his windshield!

The time shown on the fine is 3:08 p.m., one minute before the payment is recorded on the app. “I sent an email to explain that I had spent about a minute looking for the correct code, but this explanation was not accepted. Besides, I didn’t meet a parking agent on site,” Guy explains.

“Intimidation of citizens”

And nothing can be done for him. “I find it very inhuman. We should at least give people a few minutes to enter the necessary data and make the payment”, explains Guy. “I wonder if the city is aware of this very strict procedure. What if she thinks it is correct that even after a clarification email, the parking company remains on this rigorous position and does not accept this one-minute difference? It looks like intimidation towards the citizen,” laments Guy.

And the Belgian does not intend to pay his fine. The initial amount was 29.30 euros, but in the meantime, with the dunning costs, the bill now stands at 51.93 euros. “I received a second reminder by registered mail. Nevertheless, I have no intention of paying. I think it’s an error in principle and I’m probably not the only one to have experienced it, ”explains the sixty-year-old.
