Paxos Labs launches PAXGy to bridge tokenized gold and institutional lending

Paxos Labs launched PAXGy on September 24, 2026, bridging the gap between tokenized gold and a 50-year-old institutional lending market.

Unlocking a Half-Century-Old Financial Mechanism

For fifty years, the traditional precious metals market has determined a daily lease rate on every single business day. Yet, the vast majority of physical gold owners remained locked out of these yields. Institutional minimums, strict counterparty relationships with bullion banks, and specialized settlement infrastructure kept the market exclusive to a select group of refineries, jewelry manufacturers, mining corporations, and central banks. According to World Gold Council survey data from 2026, 37 percent of central bank respondents actively manage their reserves through lending and swaps. For retail and standard digital holders, however, participating in that yield generation was practically impossible.

Paxos Labs designed PAXGy to dismantle this barrier. Rather than paying out a separate dividend in fiat currency or a volatile altcoin, PAXGy is engineered to appreciate in exchange rate directly against PAX Gold (PAXG). An investor enters with a specific quantity of gold exposure, and as the underlying leasing strategy generates returns, the position can eventually be redeemed for more nominal ounces than what was originally deposited. Gold that generates more gold.

The Fee Problem

The macroeconomic backdrop highlights why this tokenized approach matters. Paxos Labs notes that approximately 530 billion US dollars worth of gold sits inside traditional exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Investors in these instruments routinely pay annual management fees of up to 40 basis points simply to hold an asset that generates zero organic yield.

Meanwhile, the parallel ecosystem of tokenized gold has evolved rapidly. The sector has expanded past a market capitalization of billions, recording staggering trading volume during the first quarter of 2026 alone—surpassing the total volume seen across the entire previous year. PAXGy enters this expanding market by routing the underlying gold to audited institutional borrowers via established leasing channels. The resulting yield feeds straight into the token exchange rate.

Cross-Chain Availability and DeFi Integration

The underlying blockchain infrastructure does not magically conjure yield out of thin air. Instead, it acts as an open gateway to an existing institutional debt market. PAXGy is live on OKX Gold Earn and X Layer, alongside decentralized venues including Uniswap, 0x, and Ether.fi.

To facilitate smooth cross-chain liquidity, Chainlink’s CCIP protocol handles the underlying data transfer. This allows a user to move a PAXGy position across supported blockchain networks without needing to unwind the core asset structure first. As Paxos Labs confirmed during the late-September rollout, additional trading venues and integrations are expected to roll out across the broader multi-chain ecosystem.

The mechanics governing PAXGy remain anchored to real-world finance. The economic yield relies entirely on institutional borrowing demand, keeping the product tied to macro credit conditions rather than speculative digital asset loops. By shrinking institutional thresholds down to fractional, tokenized amounts, the protocol tests whether decentralized finance can successfully democratize one of the oldest credit markets in global finance.
