The Environmental Commission of the Megalopolis activated phase 1 environmental contingency in the metropolitan area of ​​Mexico City starting at 3:00 p.m. (central time) on Wednesday, March 6, due to the maximum concentration of ozone being recorded. .

According to information provided by the Atizapán monitoring station, located in the municipality of Atizapán de Zaragoza, State of Mexico, in the last three days an anticyclonic system has been maintained over the center of the country, which intensified this day and generated a clear sky, high solar radiation, as well as a maximum temperature of 30ºC and weak wind.

“Over the last two hours, the transport of precursor pollutants, ozone, has been persistent towards the northwest of the Valley of Mexico and remains in the area due to the present atmospheric stability,” the press release read. .

Due to the environmental context, the corresponding authorities decided to activate PHASE 1 OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONTINGENCY DUE TO OZONE, in order to reduce the exposure of citizens to contaminated air and generate health risks, in addition to opting for the reduction of pollutants.

At 8:00 p.m., the authorities announced that the emergency is maintained, as well as the measures imposed since 3:00 p.m., because the Atizapán station registered maximum ozone concentration, which caused conditions to remain adverse.

Due to the weather conditions in the city and throughout the metropolitan area, the Double Hoy No Circula was also activated for Thursday, March 7—from 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.—under the following conditions:

• Private use vehicles with verification hologram 2.
• Private use vehicles with type 1 verification hologram and whose last numerical digit is 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9.
• Private use vehicles with verification hologram 0 and 00, green sticker, plate ending 1 and 2 —these are the cars that regularly rest on Thursdays.
• Units that do not carry a verification hologram, such as old, demonstration or transfer vehicles, new ones, those with a tourist pass, foreign plates or with plates made up of letters, the same restriction applies to vehicles that carry hologram 2.
• Restriction on the circulation of 50% of the LP gas distribution units, to stationary tanks that do not have a dry disconnection valve and whose registration termination is NON.
• Local or federal cargo vehicles stop circulating between 06:00 and 10:00, with the exception of those that are in the Self-Regulation Program of the CDMX or the State of Mexico.
• Taxis with verification hologram “00”, “0”, “1” or “2” that must stop circulating in accordance with the indicated provisions, will be restricted to circulation from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. hours.

Given the activated measure, the commission issued the following recommendations for the population during the environmental contingency:

• Avoid civic, cultural and recreational activities or exercise between 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
• Suspend any organized outdoor activity in the same period of time.
• Postpone outdoor, sporting, cultural events or mass shows.
• It is recommended not to smoke, especially in closed spaces.

In order to avoid emissions, the authorities urged:

• Facilitate and continue remote work, in addition to making purchases or procedures online to reduce travel.
• Avoid the use of flavorings, aerosols, paints, waterproofing products or products containing solvents.
• Refill gas after 6:00 p.m. and before 10:00 a.m. the next day.
• Check and repair leaks in domestic gas installations.
• Reduce fuel use at home by shortening shower time to a maximum of five minutes and when cooking, use containers with lids.
