Plebiscite in Chile: this is how the world reacts to the rejection of the new Constitution – Latin America – International

The world knows this Sunday night the results of the plebiscite in Chile that resulted in the rejection of a new Constitution. With 95% of the tables counted, the “rejection” reaches 61% and the “approve” 38%.

The South American country approved in 2020 the drafting of a new Magna Carta after the social outbreak that it registered in 2019. Finally, This new Constitution was widely rejected on September 4 and the 1980 Constitution, created during the Pinochet dictatorship, will remain in force.

The Constitution rejected this Sunday was drafted equally by men and women and was made up of 178 pages, 388 articles and 54 transitory regulations. After the text was disclosed, a strong division was generated in the country, despite the fact that the creation of a new text to replace the 1980 one was approved by a majority of 80%.

The President of Chile, Gabriel Boric, elected in December 2021, was in favor of “approval” and called for this Monday, September 5, all the parties to continue a “constituent process.”

One of the first political leaders in the region to react was the Colombian President Gustavo Petrowho wrote on Twitter: “Pinochet revived,” adding that “only if democratic and social forces unite, will it be possible to leave behind a past that stains all of Latin America and open the democratic alamedas.”

The Former President Iván Duque also spoke about the results in Chile: “The Chilean people spoke on a beautiful democratic day. Good sense triumphed over ideological impositions that would fracture forever a society that has achieved important social and economic achievements.”

The former presidential candidate Enrique Gomez He also spoke about it and tweeted: “For socialists like Petro, there is only democracy when it benefits them. Chile and the Chileans decided to reject it because they managed to realize the mistake they were making.”

José Antonio Kast Rist, Chilean lawyer and politicianor, leader of the Republican Party and former presidential candidate of that country commented: “Chile is a great nation and after tonight, a freer country with more hope.”

Juan Fernando Cristo, former Minister of the Interior of President Juan Manuel Santosstated on his Twitter: “The result in Chile is overwhelming. A large majority rejected the new Constitution. The worst thing is to stay with Pinochet’s. Hopefully they will build consensus in Chilean society for a new liberal and democratic constitution.”

Senator of the Democratic Center Maria Fernanda Cabal opined: “The ‘modern degenerates’ who destroyed Chile can go to Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela or Russia… ah! It’s true that they are put in jail there. #VivaChileLibre.”

Nicholas Monckeberg DiazChilean lawyer and politician, member of the National Renovation party, stated in his account: “The people of Chile once again spoke clearly. Let the world know: in this corner of the planet, the defense of freedom, the rule of law and the Democracy is not compromised. Dialogue and the politics of agreements do not make us complex, on the contrary, it represents us and makes us proud”.

Roberto Ampuero, former foreign minister, former Chilean minister of culture and former ambassador, reacted against the words of the Colombian president: “President Petro, of Colombia, offends the vast majority of Chileans by criticizing our sovereign decision to reject (with 62%) the draft of the new Political Constitution. Respect Chile, Pdte!”
