Tel Aviv In order to end the war with Russia, Ukraine must also win over countries in the Global South. Kiev receives support from Saudi Arabia. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had invited to a two-day meeting in the Saudi Arabian coastal city of Jeddah at the weekend, where a peaceful solution to the Ukraine war was sought.
But bin Salman is also pursuing other goals with the conference: The crown prince wants to develop Saudi Arabia “into an important peacemaker, not only in the Middle East but also on the global stage,” said the Iranian-American political scientist Majid Rafizadeh.
Bin Salman is involved in the Ukraine war because he “seeks international respect,” said Shaul Yanai, who until recently was a professor of the Gulf region at the Hebrew University in Tel Aviv. He also wants to establish himself as the leader of the global south.
