Las Vegas residents were drying out Sunday after two days of heavy rain that flooded streets, prompted several water rescues, closed a portion of Interstate 15 south of the city and possibly caused at least one death.

According to the National Weather Service, a marginal risk of excessive rain was expected on Sunday before conditions improved for the rest of the week.

Heavy rains in recent days led to 24 rescues, including more than 30 vehicles stranded in the water and about a dozen people rescued from standing or moving water, according to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.

On Saturday morning, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue found the body in northwest Las Vegas of an individual who witnesses said drowned after being swept away, KSNV reported. Authorities did not immediately release the cause of death or the person’s name.

Over the past two days, some areas in and around Las Vegas have received more than 3 inches (7.6 centimeters) of rain, according to data from the Clark County Office of Flood Control.

Las Vegas will receive up to 3.9 inches (9.9 centimeters) of rain by 2023, which is 1.2 inches (3 centimeters) above normal and just 0.19 inches (0.48 centimeters) below normal. the city’s normal annual rainfall, according to the weather service.

Last month, Tropical Storm Hilary hit the city, as rain blanketed the Las Vegas Strip and prompted several water rescues.

In addition to flooding streets and sidewalks in Las Vegas, the heavy rains also closed all lanes of the I-15 freeway south of Jean. But authorities announced Saturday night that all lanes of the highway were open again.

According to the weather service, a flood watch would remain in effect through Monday morning for parts of eastern, north central, northeast and south central Nevada.
