“It was pure disbelief, mixed with overwhelming joy. For so long we had hoped for this day, had wondered if we would ever see our families again. When they told us we were going to be released, the feeling was indescribable. Like a weight had been lifted off our shoulders.”

What was the most difficult part of your captivation?

“The uncertainty was the hardest. Not knowing what the future held, when we might be released, if we would ever see our families again, that was the most grueling part.”

What message would you like to send to all the Thai people and the Thai government?

“We are so grateful for the government’s unwavering commitment to bringing us home. To everyone back in Thailand who prayed for us, who never gave up on us, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your support gave us hope during the darkest moments.”

Watchara, can you tell us about the support network that helped you during your captivity?

“We received support from unexpected sources. We were treated with some dignity by the people who held us, even those who didn’t understand our language.We shared stories, played games, found small ways to lift each other’s spirits.

What are your hopes for the future?

“My biggest desire is to simply live a normal life again, to be with my family, to work hard and contribute to society. This experience has changed us, but it has also reinforced the importance of family, of community, and of the simple joys in life.”
