Rigathi Gachagua hosts Edwin Sifuna and Linda Mwananchi in Nyeri

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has hosted Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and other figures from the Linda Mwananchi movement at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County. The gathering on Tuesday marked one of Gachagua’s first high-profile political engagements since returning to Kenya from the United States, where he spent close to two months following his departure on Wednesday night, August 26, 2026.

The meeting unfolds against a backdrop of intensifying political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election. Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala has been aggressively promoting a potential joint presidential ticket uniting Gachagua and Sifuna to challenge President William Ruto. Malala argues that such an alliance would effectively combine crucial voting blocs to mount a formidable opposition challenge.

Gachagua Welcomes Political Delegation to Wamunyoro Residence

Photographs shared on Gachagua’s official social media channels showed the former deputy president relaxing at his rural home before welcoming the visiting delegation. Welcoming his guests, Gachagua referred to the attendees as his cousins and voiced optimism about their coalition-building efforts. “Welcome to Wamunyoro residence, my cousins from Linda Mwananchi. When we come together, great things must happen,” he stated.

The delegation featured several notable political and civil society figures, including DCP Secretary General John Methu, Cleophas Malala, former Law Society of Kenya president Faith Odhiambo, and Linda Mwananchi head of communication Pauline Njoroge. Sifuna has emerged as a central pillar within the Linda Mwananchi movement, which champions a people-centered governance agenda.

For Gachagua, the engagement forms part of a broader strategy to solidify his political base within the Mount Kenya region following his impeachment as Deputy President in October 2024. While abroad, Gachagua had largely remained out of the public spotlight, making his post-return consultations an indicator of shifting opposition dynamics.

Malala Claims Administration Blocks Sifuna from Political Vehicle

Neither side announced a formal political agreement following the discussions at Wamunyoro, and specific details of the closed-door talks remain undisclosed. Malala has publicly alleged that the administration is actively seeking to block Sifuna from securing a political party vehicle ahead of the vote, maintaining that a unified opposition bloc led by figures like Sifuna and Gachagua remains a primary threat to Ruto’s re-election bid.

As political actors continue to test coalition formulas and voting bloc mathematics, public attention remains fixed on whether these preliminary dialogues at Wamunyoro will crystallize into a formal electoral pact before 2027.
