The confrontation unfolded while DeSantis was touting Florida’s economic performance during a Republican Party of Florida gathering. Mid-sentence, a female heckler interrupted the proceedings, prompting an immediate and unhesitating response from the governor from the stage.
“Hey, Soros isn’t paying you enough because you’re not very good at this,” DeSantis said, pointing directly at the woman as security personnel moved in to escort her out of the crowd, according to coverage from Fox News.
Confronting the Disruptions in Tampa
As the crowd began booing the protester, the governor continued his remarks. “You should try again,” he told the room, before returning his focus to the Soros-funded conspiracy tropes often invoked in right-wing political rhetoric. “He needs to pay some better talent instead of having people like you show up. This ain’t my first rodeo, lady. I’ve seen it all, and you ain’t very good at it.”
The disruption was not an isolated incident during the evening. Later in the event, a second heckler attempted to shout down the governor. Rather than ignoring the interruption, DeSantis used the moment to offer a critique of modern political demonstration tactics.
“Let me just give you guys some advice: standing up and screaming is not effective. Okay?” DeSantis shot back. He recalled past encounters with demonstrators, mentioning an instance where members of Antifa charged him and were handled by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, describing the outcome as funny and effective.
“I think Soros is tightening his wallet because the people he’s paying are terrible at this,” DeSantis added, leaning into the microphone. “He used to hire people who were really good. Now they’re just screeching, and it’s almost like, I don’t even know what it is. And so, listen, you should be respectful, you should listen. This is part of the civic process. But, if you’re not going to do that, do a better job at protesting, please. Gosh.”

Conservative commentator Eric Daugherty posted that DeSantis had “pummeled a leftist heckler,” while other online accounts hailed the exchange as a definitive takedown.
In contrast, representatives for the Soros family’s philanthropic network firmly rejected the governor’s allegations regarding paid protesters. A spokesperson for the Open Society Foundations directed inquiries to a prior organizational statement clarifying their policies. “We do not pay people to protest or directly train or coordinate protestors,” the statement noted. While acknowledging that nonviolent public demonstrations are vital to a free society, the foundation emphasized that grantees must operate within the law and uphold commitments to human rights and nonviolence.
