San Francisco’s Sundown Cinema concludes 2026 season successfully

San Francisco’s Sundown Cinema series officially concluded its 2026 season this week, confirming a successful return to the city’s public parks following a period of organizational uncertainty. As of the October 23, 2026, season wrap-up, the revival of the popular film series, which faced an existential dilemma following scandal in recent years, was made possible through a collaboration between The San Francisco Standard and presenting partner Amazon.

A Summer of Community Screenings

The 2026 season featured five family-friendly screenings held at iconic locations across the city. Attendees braved the local weather to participate in the events, starting in June with The Princess Bride at Dolores Park. The series continued in July with Inside Out at the Presidio Civil War Parade, followed by an August screening of The Parent Trap at Marina Green and a September showing of School of Rock outside the Ferry Building.

Beyond the films, the events served as hubs for community engagement. Local partners hosted booths to highlight various causes, ranging from public safety to women’s volleyball. Amazon provided free popcorn and samples from local businesses like Nana Joes, while also hosting a “Touch a Truck” station at the Crane Cove screening where children could explore delivery vehicles. The Standard also maintained a presence at each site, where reporters stepped away from their desks to host the events and interact with the public. At the Marina Green screening, Comedy Correspondent for The Standard Sophia Garrow brought her father, Steve, to host a bonus “Ask a Dad” booth. I’m a fairly new dad myself, so this is something that’s very close and important to me: making space and opportunities for families to enjoy arts and cinema, Allsop noted regarding the initiative.

Building on a Local Tradition

The series, described by District 8 Supervisor Rafael Mandelman as an “amazing tradition that goes back more than 20 years in San Francisco,” received support from city officials who attended throughout the summer. Mandelman praised the organizers for ensuring the continuation of the screenings after the program’s future had been in doubt.

Dean Allsop, Amazon’s leader of community engagement in Northern California, noted that the company’s involvement is part of a broader commitment to providing affordable, family-friendly activities in the city. We are invested in making sure San Francisco remains a place where you can have access to family-friendly fun that is affordable and accessible to all, Allsop said.
