SP Politician Roth Confronts SVP Colleague Schnyder Over Swiss Rail Funding

Switzerland’s debate over national mobility escalated in a televised clash during an episode of the SRF program Arena, where politicians locked horns over funding priorities for public transit versus road infrastructure.

Clashing Visions for Swiss Infrastructure

The debate featured two distinct political philosophies for the country’s transport network. SP National Councillor David Roth, 41, alongside VCS President Jelena Filipovic, 34, pushed for heavier investments in public transportation. On the opposing side, Auto-Schweiz President Peter Grünenfelder, 59, and SVP National Councillor Markus Schnyder, 37, argued that the road should not be neglected.

For much of the broadcast, guests exchanged standard talking points. However, the discussion took a sharp turn when Schnyder repeatedly warned against uneconomic rail lines and rising ticket prices.

A Personal Accusation on Regional Rail

Frustrated by his colleague’s stance, Roth dropped the formal Siezen polite form typically observed on the program. Addressing Schnyder directly, Roth recalled past negotiations in the federal transport commission:

Markus, in einer unserer ersten Verkehrskommissionssitzungen hast du mit Vehemenz für ein Bahnprojekt in Glarus gekämpft

Roth stated that he had backed Schnyder’s efforts back then because maintaining robust connections to and from Glarus mattered for the region’s vitality. But he argued that such regional advocacy should apply universally rather than selectively. Nur weil es gerade die Heimat betrifft, für die Bahn zu kämpfen, und wenn es um andere geht, diese im Stich zu lassen, ist nicht die feine Art, Roth charged.

Schnyder Defends the Glarus Connection

Schnyder defended his position by drawing a distinction between preserving an existing lifeline and funding expansive new transit networks. He maintained that aggressive public transit expansion only turns a profit in or directly between major metropolitan areas, requiring substantial auxiliary measures to cover ongoing deficits elsewhere.

Addressing the specific situation in his home canton, Schnyder explained that the regional fight was about survival rather than luxury expansion. Wir haben heute eine Direktverbindung nach Zürich und Rapperswil, das ist sehr begrüssenswert, Schnyder said. Diese wollte man uns wegnehmen, und da haben wir uns natürlich zu Recht dagegen gewehrt.
