There were no injuries, but firefighters struggled to dislodge the squatters present in the 8-storey building, reported Walter Derieuw, the spokesman for the fire department.
The fire was reported shortly before 6:30 p.m. When the emergency services arrived on the scene, the 2 upper floors were on fire.
“During search and rescue operations, our teams found five people on the fifth floor and advised them to leave,” the spokesperson explained. “Faced with their refusal, they were evacuated. A total of eight people were examined by the doctor but none of them were injured.
The circulation of STIB trams was interrupted during the operations. The firefighters finally managed to put out the fire, the exact cause of which is not yet known.
