A Friday departure along Lea Place in Pinetown turned into a violent gun battle on October 9, 2026, when an armed hijacking attempt met resistance from a father protecting his children. Dashcam footage of the encounter has since circulated widely online, capturing the moment the motorist returned fire at his attackers and fatally wounded one of them, IOL reported.
How the Driveway Ambush Unfolded on Lea Place
The incident began when a father and his two children were reversing out of their residential driveway. According to details shared by police and regional outlets, a white vehicle carrying unidentified men pulled up and blocked the family’s path. Suspects quickly alighted from the vehicle behind them, turning a mundane exit into a targeted ambush.
According to source accounts detailed by IOL, one of the attackers ran directly toward the family’s property gate and placed a gun to the head of the driver’s son, who was standing outside. Simultaneously, a second hijacker drew a firearm and opened direct fire on the father inside the bakkie. With his daughter seated right beside him in the front passenger seat, the father drew his own weapon and fired through the driver’s window.

The dashcam recording shows the bakkie owner discharging his firearm while his hands are visibly off the steering wheel. The vehicle rolls forward, eventually coming to a halt against a tree with a cracked windscreen. In the aftermath of the gunfire, the driver’s son rushed to the side of the vehicle to pull his sister safely out of the passenger seat while their father maintained his defensive posture.
Police Investigation and the Arrest in KwaDabeka
KwaZulu-Natal police responded to the violent episode by opening multiple criminal cases. Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza confirmed that law enforcement initiated investigations into attempted carjacking, three counts of attempted murder, and an inquest. While one suspected hijacker died at the scene, others fled in the getaway vehicle.
The investigation reached a breakthrough on Sunday, when Pinetown detectives tracked a suspect to KwaDabeka. Police arrested a 35-year-old man found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and 14 rounds of ammunition. Authorities stated that a third hijacker was subsequently located at a clinic.

The arrested suspect faces multiple charges, including attempted carjacking, attempted murder, and the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. He is scheduled to make his appearance in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
Community Groups Urge Caution After Viral Security Footage
The viral dashcam footage sparked intense discussions regarding residential security and self-defence amid South Africa’s persistent violent crime rates. Commentators across social platforms praised the father’s action under extreme pressure, while community safety organisations urged heightened caution around residential perimeters.

Andre Snyman of eBlockwatch addressed the footage online, encouraging citizens to stand firm against criminal elements while stressing the importance of tactical responses. Meanwhile, Justin Bosse, chairperson of the Pinetown Community Police Forum, highlighted the acute vulnerability motorists face when entering and leaving their properties. Bosse noted that while the children escaped physical injury, the family was left deeply traumatised by the ordeal, and confirmed that the father sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange.
As the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court prepares for Tuesday’s proceedings, local detectives continue working to trace the remaining suspects who fled the Lea Place scene.
