Taoiseach Apologises To Family Of Fallen Prison Officer

The family of murdered prison officer Brian Stack will receive a formal state apology in the Dáil today for systemic failures in the subsequent police investigations. Stack, who served as a chief prison officer at Portlaoise Prison, was shot in the neck by the Provisional IRA in March 1983 and succumbed to his injuries 18 months later.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin Set to Address the Dáil

Taoiseach Micheál Martin is scheduled to address the Dáil to offer the apology on behalf of the Irish State to the Stack family. While the Provisional IRA took responsibility for the killing in 2023, no one was ever brought to justice despite three separate investigations into the incident.

Family Welcomes Official Acknowledgment of Failings

Speaking on RTÉ Morning Ireland on Monday, Austin Stack praised the Taoiseach for demonstrating political leadership regarding his father’s case. He highlighted the importance of the state finally acknowledging investigative shortcomings.

“It brings a great deal of comfort to my family that the State are now officially recognising the failings that occurred in three separate investigations, particularly that first investigation,” Stack stated during the broadcast.

Earlier Apologies and the Pressures of the Troubles

This acknowledgement follows a previous apology issued in 2019 by then Garda Commissioner Drew Harris concerning failures in the handling of the case. At the time, Harris characterized the prison officer’s murder as one of the most horrific atrocities of the Troubles era.

Austin Stack acknowledged the complex security situation of 1980s Ireland, noting that garda intelligence operated under immense pressure during the conflict with paramilitary groups. He also pointed out the historical absence of institutional support systems for affected families during that period.

“In the 1980s in Ireland, there just wasn’t any backup, or there was no counselling, there were no supports for people like our family at the time. So getting this apology now at this time is really important to us,” Stack said.

Unanswered Questions Remain Over Initial Inquiries

Despite the upcoming address in the Dáil, fundamental questions regarding why the initial inquiries failed to secure prosecutions remain unanswered by authorities.
