The End of Video Game Chains in Chile: Microplay’s Bankruptcy and Zmart’s Closure

The video game chain business in Chile is coming to an end. After the bankruptcy of Microplay in 2023, the Zmart company has now announced the end of its operations.

The information began to circulate this week and the rumors spread during Wednesday afternoon. That was finally crowned as night fell, as the company notified its workers about the end of their duties.

According to reports on social networks, the communication took place through an email titled “Game Over.” This established that the stores that were still in operation will remain closed as of February 1.

In this way, employees will no longer have to travel to work and, unfortunately, will have to wait to resolve the end of their employment ties.

“All stores will be closed and you should not attend, unless it is necessary to coordinate the withdrawal of merchandise,” said the official message from the directors of the company that is preparing to turn off the game.

With the measure, the last surviving chain is WePlay, remaining the last one that maintains the legacy of the stores that proliferated in shopping centers and other areas of the country.

But it is necessary to emphasize that that business began to falter in recent years and not only because of the pandemic. The companies’ own model was increasingly unsustainable. It is enough to highlight that the cost of rentals in malls and the operational expenses of the stores imply, for example, that the cost of their video game offering became increasingly less attractive for players.

At the same time, there are also reports on social networks about changes in the operation with distributors, but for now the company has not provided official information about the debts it owed.

Ultimately, it is important to emphasize that the chains are not the only places that sell video games, since the retail stores are still in operation, although quite a few valued things that the chains did, such as ensuring pre-sales and even holding launch events. None of that will continue to be in vogue on a large scale.
