As he explained to ERT, he has not been able to contact his brother, as “they did not allow me to”. “From now on we will follow all legal procedures. We will go to the Court of Appeal, then inevitably we will go to the Supreme Court and then we have to go to the European courts, where the vindication of the mayor of Heimarra will be certain,” noted Leonardo Beleri.
And he continued: “All this takes time and unfortunately the Albanian authorities and the Albanian services play very well with time.”
“It was not accepted by the Albanian court to install a person of the Rama government’s liking as the mayor of Heimarra.” Regarding the actions and procedures from the Greek side and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he said that he does not know the details of the procedures, “whatever has been done has not brought results. Unfortunately, the condemnation of the mayor of Heimarra came. Without getting into the process of judging whether things were done right or wrong”, underlined his brother Freddy Beleri.
He predicted that “the conviction of the mayor of Heimarra will also follow in the Court of Appeal, it may reduce his sentence, but they are not so interested in Freddy Beleris if his sentence will be reduced or increased. They want him to be convicted in the appeal, his criminal record to be stained, to automatically lose the town hall. That was their plan from the beginning and so far it looks like it’s coming to fruition.”
“Essentially, my brother has spent 15 months in prison. He is released from prison at Christmas. But he does not assume the role of mayor” he clarified as he explained “If in the first appeal he makes he is sentenced for even one hour, he automatically loses the City Hall and loses his political rights for a certain period of time to be determined by the court”. And he predicted that “then they will probably call new elections”.
In the event that his brother is convicted, he again underlined that “the Greek ethnic minority of Heimarra is obliged to stand against any obstacle. We’ve done this forever. We as a generation are obliged to honor the struggles of our ancestors. Let’s respect Freddie’s efforts and personally his desire to sit in prison as long as necessary and not make any compromises with the Albanian authorities. From the first day of his arrest until today, the only suggestion that has been made to Fred is to lose the Municipality of Heimarra. That is, to declare resignation in order to win his freedom”.
